What do Lutherans believe about Communion? Holy Communion is one of two sacraments in the Lutheran church. In Holy Communion, Lutherans recall the saving acts of God through Word, bread and wine, and are connected with Christ and with Christians of all times and places. In this sacrament we are fed with the Body and Blood of Christ. Sometimes Holy Communion is called the Eucharist, which is Greek for “thanksgiving,” and may also be used as the name for the liturgical celebration of the sacrament. It was Martin Luther’s confessional affirmation that Lutherans celebrate Holy Communion weekly. Through Luther’s preaching and catechetical writing, Luther encouraged those attending public worship, to participate in the fullest possible way by hearing the Word (both read and preached),singing the praise of God, joining in the prayers, and receiving Holy Communion. Because of various historical and cultural influences since that time, Lutheran congregations began to celebrate the sacrament less frequently. In a recent effort to recover Luther’s early understanding of the need to offer weekly Communion, the ELCA has strongly encouraged contemporary Lutheran churches to reclaim the practice of weekly Communion celebration.
